Aaron Ramsdale out of senior football after becoming Southampton’s fourth choice

Aaron Ramsdale is now Southampton’s fourth-choice goalkeeper and, according to BBC Sport, has not played a competitive match for five months. The slide started earlier: in April 2023, while with Arsenal, Ramsdale’s costly error helped turn a game at the Emirates into a 3-3 draw against Southampton and fed into Arsenal’s failed 2022-23 title bid.

Four months later the hierarchy changed. Arsenal signed David Raya from Brentford and the Spaniard quickly took over as the No.1. Ramsdale then fell behind in 2023-24 and lost his starting place after just four league games, including another mistake in a match vs Brentford where Yoane Wissa scored.

From Arsenal to the Saints

In August 2024, Ramsdale was sold to Southampton for £25m after returning from Euro 2024 with England as an unused substitute. He made 30 league appearances as Southampton finished bottom with 12 points, conceding 66 goals—the most by any goalkeeper in 2024-25. Begovic, speaking to the BBC, said it was “unfortunate” that “maybe a few things haven’t aligned” for him at the Saints.

After relegation, Ramsdale tried to reboot his career on loan at Newcastle for 2025-26. He kept just two clean sheets in 23 appearances across all competitions and played 12 times in the Premier League, with the team still unable to secure a permanent No.1. He also experienced a tough Champions League night, conceding seven in a 7-2 defeat by Barcelona.
