Antonio Giner returns to Valencia as medical director after Pedro López Mateu’s dismissal

Valencia has dismissed Pedro López Mateu as its medical director after eight seasons and is now preparing the return of Antonio Giner to Mestalla. The club will make the appointment official shortly, with Giner having previously held the role for several seasons.

MARCA reports that the move, led by Braulio, is aimed at regaining some players’ trust in the club’s medical staff and addressing the run of injuries that has piled up in the early part of the campaign, with several cases both on the training pitch and in the treatment rooms. Javier Aguirre, meanwhile, said at his unveiling press conference that he will closely monitor the injured players, given the number currently sidelined.

Giner is considered a longtime figure at the training ground: he started in the club’s lower categories and school before becoming medical director, then later left when Pedro replaced him in an era that followed Meriton’s takeover. After that, he continued working in football with Castellón and the FFCV and also runs his own private clinic.
