Arteta agrees new Arsenal deal

Mikel Arteta has reached an agreement to extend his contract with Arsenal, which is currently set to expire at the end of this season, BBC Sport reports. The Spaniard has been in talks for months over a new deal to keep him at the helm of the Premier League champions.

BBC Sport says the negotiations moved into the final phase after the outlet reported earlier in the month that an agreement between all parties was close. It is now understood that Arteta has reached a final agreement with the Gunners to extend his stay at the club.

While BBC Sport notes there is no confirmation on the length of the new contract, it is expected to take him to at least his 10th year at Arsenal following his appointment in December 2019. The new terms also include a sharp pay increase: from his current salary of £10m per year to a deal that adds a further £5m in bonuses.

Speaking last week about the contract talks, Arteta said fans “don’t have to worry” because he wants to remain, adding he is “extremely happy” and grateful to work with those around him, as quoted by BBC Sport.
