Athletic to expand San Mamés with a first phase of over €9m

Athletic Club is preparing an expansion at San Mamés with over €9 million earmarked within a wider plan of €15 million in investment. The club’s treasurer, Guillermo Ruiz de Longarte, explained the roadmap in a video ahead of the accounts and budget they will submit at the Oct. 28 members’ assembly.

In his words, of the €15 million, “more than €9” will go to the first and second phases of expanding La Catedral. He also set aside “more than €2” for improvements at Lezama and “almost €2 million” for technology tied to sports medicine and business-development applications.

According to the statement, works will be carried out after the current season ends, though he did not specify how many seats the stadium will gain. Longarte also framed the club’s finances: he called the last year “a record” with €193m in total revenue, €154m in expense base, an operating result of €38m, and a final line of €20m. For 2026-27, he stressed the budget is “absolutely divergent,” with €152m in revenue and €155m in costs due to the team not playing in Europe.
