Boehly and Walter sell Chelsea stakes to Clearlake

Chelsea is set for an ownership reset after Todd Boehly and Mark Walter sold their stakes to majority owner Clearlake Capital, according to BBC Sport. The deal means Clearlake—led by co-founders Behdad Eghbali and Jose E. Feliciano—now takes full control of the club.

The sell-off also includes Swiss billionaire Hansjorg Wyss, who has transferred his stake as well. With Wyss, Boehly and Walter all stepping away from their holdings, Clearlake completes the move to 100% control.

Final step to full control

BBC Sport reports that each of the three departing figures (Boehly, Walter and Wyss) held 12.8% of Chelsea. Clearlake already owned 61.5%, so the purchases complete the ownership structure.

For Boehly, the change is also a role change: he will leave the chairman position he has held since 2022, when a consortium led by the group bought Chelsea for £2.3bn from Roman Abramovich. Abramovich was sanctioned by the UK government in March 2022 over alleged links to Vladimir Putin, which he denied.

In a quoted message carried by BBC Sport, Boehly said it had been “an honour” to serve as chairman and thanked those who helped secure a “bright future” for the club, adding that he believes Chelsea is well placed to keep succeeding under Clearlake’s leadership. Eghbali and Feliciano, meanwhile, thanked Boehly for his “time and contribution” and said they want to keep investing in infrastructure, sporting performance, player development and long-term success for the club and its supporters.

No operational shake-up

The club said there will be no changes to day-to-day operations, leadership or strategy as a result of Clearlake taking full control.
