Boehly exits Chelsea as Clearlake takes full control

Todd Boehly and Mark Walter leave Chelsea after Clearlake Capital buys them out, with day-to-day largely unchanged and stadium plans possibly shifting.

Chelsea has confirmed a major ownership shift: Todd Boehly and his partner Mark Walter are out after Clearlake Capital took full control by buying them out, The Guardian reports. Clearlake had already been the majority owner, but the club’s structure is now fully consolidated under the US private equity group.

The article stresses that this departure is unlikely to change the day-to-day running of the club at Stamford Bridge. Operational leadership and the broader strategy are expected to remain the same, because Clearlake—through Behdad Eghbali and José E. Feliciano—had already been steering decisions well before Wednesday’s confirmation.

Exit without immediate impact

As The Guardian recalls, when the BlueCo consortium took over from Roman Abramovich in 2022 for £2.5bn, Boehly and Walter held an 38.5% stake alongside Hansjörg Wyss. Over time, their influence diminished and the group’s internal dynamics had already shown public cracks years earlier. The paper notes that Clearlake’s approach to governance and control was discussed long before this buyout was final.

The piece also revisits why Boehly is described as leaving “burned”: his period as the public face of the takeover, controversial recruitment calls and high-profile comments that backfired. It cites, for example, Boehly’s explanation for signing Marc Cucurella from Brighton, saying he believed Manchester City wanted the Spain left-back.

The big question: the stadium

Where change could matter is the stadium plan. The Guardian says Chelsea were in talks back in September 2024 about moving away from Stamford Bridge toward Earls Court—though an independent proposal for the site stalled after receiving planning permission. With Boehly and Walter now gone, the outlet suggests the situation could finally move.

Finally, The Guardian adds that Boehly and Walter are believed to have made a modest profit on their investment, and that Jonathan Goldstein, described as a Boehly ally, has also left the board. Wyss has invested through a Clearlake vehicle and has not exited, according to the report.
