Cahuzac debuts for Lens with 2-1 defeat to Monaco

Lens hit the reset button after Dino Toppmöller left, and Yannick Cahuzac’s debut as interim coach didn’t bring an immediate turnaround. As The Guardian reports, he took charge for the first time this Friday at the Stade Louis II, but Lens fell 2-1 against Monaco.

A rapid exit for Toppmöller

The club’s recent standing set expectations high: Lens finished second in Ligue 1 and won the Coupe de France last season. But, according to The Guardian, the climb has become harder. Toppmöller departed by mutual consent after just six games, making him Lens’s shortest-serving manager since the Second World War.

The break-up looks tied to more than results. The Guardian cites CEO Benjamin Parrot saying staff divisions had been present even before the Trophée des Champions—between a French group and a more international one. Toppmöller arrived with two assistants; Lens tried to sack Nelson Morgado, and the German backed his assistant, refusing the dismissal. Morgado left and Cahuzac stepped up in his place.

First match, early setback

Cahuzac left Lorient where he had been an assistant to return to Lens—where he’d previously played—before becoming part of Franck Haise’s coaching set-up. He was appointed interim three days before the Monaco game. In his first outing, things didn’t start well: Monaco led 1-0 at half-time, and Lens saw three potential goals disallowed by the assistant referee’s flag.

At the interval, Cahuzac’s tactical changes helped. Matthieu Udol headed in the equaliser, but Lens couldn’t finish the recovery: in the end the winner came from a Lens player, with Jonathan Gradit scoring an own goal.

The Guardian frames the moment as a need for calm after a turbulent week, with Cahuzac still described as not fully qualified yet for a permanent head role. For now, the takeaway from his first match is straightforward—Lens need to bounce back fast.
