Dani Calvo warns: Oviedo will go ‘for the kill’ in the derby

A derby fought with bite

Dani Calvo, captain of Real Oviedo, spoke ahead of the Asturian derby against Real Sporting. As reported by MARCA, he described the match as “a final for the fans and for us” and stressed that even if it is only “three points”, it is one of those fixtures that everyone marks on the calendar.

“We’ll go for the kill”

Calvo’s message was blunt: “Le estamos dando la relevancia que tiene este partido.” He also said the new arrivals already know “how important it is to get the three points.” The defender added that, despite the squad now having just three Asturian players and academy graduates (all registered with the B team), he believes the match will not be affected. Still, he acknowledged that when there were more homegrown players, “those were the ones most intense during the week.”

Pedrola out; Cazorla remembered

On the team news side, the Oviedo camp has a problem for Sunday at Carlos Tartiere (21:00): Estanis Pedrola will miss the derby due to a dislocated left shoulder. MARCA states he won’t need surgery but will be sidelined for several league matches.

Calvo was also asked about Santi Cazorla, who retired this summer. He said he misses him “always”, describing Cazorla as an Oviedo man “in his blood”, and explained that his presence helped the group get support.
