Eriksen leaves Wolfsburg by mutual consent after collapse

Christian Eriksen has left VfL Wolfsburg by mutual consent, BBC Sport reports. The decision comes just over three months after he collapsed during a friendly for Denmark against Ukraine.

The former Manchester United midfielder, 34, had been tied to the German second-tier club until June 2027. Yet, as the player explained, his main need now is to be closer to his family in Denmark as he navigates his next chapter.

Personal reasons and the wider context

Eriksen said it is “important for me to be close to my family in Denmark at the moment”, adding that he is “pleased we were able to find a solution together”. He also looked back on his time in Wolfsburg, describing it as a period of “many highs and lows”, while expressing confidence that the club is now “in good hands” in its push to return to the Bundesliga.

As BBC Sport notes, his medical situation predates this latest incident: Eriksen suffered a cardiac arrest during Denmark’s opening Euro 2021 group match against Finland in Copenhagen in 2021. An Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator (ICD) was fitted in 2022.

A contract ended early

Wolfsburg also addressed the move through its managing director for sport, Dieter Hecking. He said it was clear the decision about his future had to be Eriksen’s, that the club wanted to give him freedom in this situation, and that they have now agreed to terminate the contract.

Eriksen had not played since June. He joined Wolfsburg as a free agent a year earlier and made 34 appearances. BBC Sport also highlights his previous stops at Ajax, Tottenham, Inter Milan and Brentford.
