Garnacho already at a crossroads at Villa? Few minutes under Emery

Alejandro Garnacho arrived at Aston Villa on loan from Chelsea aiming to kick-start his career, but his opening spell in the Midlands has been rocky. As BBC Sport reports, two months into the move, the Argentine winger has yet to fully convince Unai Emery.

The clearest issue is game time. Garnacho has played just 31 minutes for Villa, spread across three substitute appearances. His longest run came in the 15-minute stint against Hull, and in recent league matches he has again been left unused—not played in the last four Villa Premier League games. BBC Sport also notes that he watched from the bench as Villa won 3-2 vs Tottenham on Saturday.

Minutes hard to come by

What makes the situation feel even tougher is the competition for Emery’s preferred roles. The season is only starting to build, and new signings have been getting chances: Joao Gomes started Villa’s opening Premier League match, while the next game saw Zion Suzuki and Nicolas Jackson come into the XI. Meanwhile, the club’s own pathway player George Hemmings has started well and earned Emery’s trust.

Injuries and timing have added complications. According to BBC Sport, a facial injury in early August disrupted Garnacho’s pre-season and left him missing the Super Cup defeat by Paris St-Germain.

Emery’s message has been firm but patient. When asked about Garnacho’s lack of minutes, he said: “Continue working. Work, work, train, work.” He added that Garnacho is progressing, but that there are players ahead of him right now and that Villa needs to be patient for the time he needs to catch up. For Garnacho, the crossroads is simple: earn Emery’s trust in training, then seize the moments when they come.
