Gilberto Mora’s ‘moment’ brings his potential move toward Barcelona closer

Gilberto Mora, of Xolos de Tijuana, is nearing a big jump after scoring his first goal for Mexico in a 1-1 draw vs Colombia. He did it at 17 years and 347 days, becoming the youngest player to score for his country.

His future is now at the centre of another transfer buzz because October 14, 2026 is when he turns 18. As reported from Mexico, Barcelona and Real Madrid are said to be competing for him, with other European clubs such as Borussia Dortmund also mentioned. Barcelona, for its part, says no official move has been made.

The story stretches two years

This storyline goes back to September 2024, when TUDNMEX claimed Barcelona invited him to train and visit La Masia and the Ciutat Esportiva Joan Gamper at 15. Mora had already debuted for Xolos and went on to play for them while hitting the milestone of scoring against Club León.

With a renewal running until 2029 and a release clause of around €25m for European clubs, Xolos would be able to benefit if negotiations move in winter. Rafa Márquez praised his profile after Mora’s recent strike: “Ya sabemos todos la calidad de Gilberto… entre todos vamos a hacer todo lo posible para que siga creciendo… ojalá podamos verlo en un equipo importante”.
