Gladbach appoint Blessin after sacking Polanski

Borussia M’gladbach have made a decisive move in their Bundesliga start: the club, sitting bottom and winless after four straight defeats in the opening four rounds, has appointed Alexander Blessin as their new head coach. The decision comes after Eugen Polanski was dismissed on September 13, as reported by Mundo Deportivo.

With the future of the bench in limbo, Jan-Moritz Lichte, Polanski’s assistant, took charge in an interim role on Saturday. However, he couldn’t reverse the results trend, with the team losing 3-4 to Mainz.

Blessin signed through 2028

Blessin arrives with a contract running until 2028. In recent seasons he was in charge of Sankt Pauli for two terms: in his first year he kept the club in the German top flight, but in his second season the team were relegated, leading to his sacking in June, according to the same report.

He also steps in after a familiar background at the club in Hamburg: Blessin was named as the replacement after Fabian Hürzeler left for Brighton just days after guiding Sankt Pauli to promotion to the Bundesliga. Before that, he spent eight years at RB Leipzig working with youth teams and previously coached KV Oostende (2020-2022), Genoa (2021/2022, per the article text) and Union Saint-Gilloise (2023-2024), winning the Belgian Cup with the latter, Mundo Deportivo adds.
