Guendouzi banned for four matches for provocations vs Lyon

Mattéo Guendouzi, who had been goading the home crowd during the return leg involving Lyon, has been hit with a significant sanction. As reported by L'Équipe, the Frenchman was suspended for the next four matches he would otherwise have been eligible to play.

The punishment comes after the 26 August second leg of the Champions League play-off between Lyon and Fenerbahçe (2-1, following a 1-1 draw in the first leg). In its statement, UEFA cited behavior including «insulting people present at the match, provoking the spectators and breaching the fundamental rules of good conduct», a wording L'Équipe attributes directly to the governing body’s communiqué.

Fine and probationary suspension

Alongside the four-match ban, Guendouzi must pay a €50,000 fine. L'Équipe adds that two of those suspended matches are attached to a one-year probationary period, starting from the date of the decision.

The report also notes that Mason Greenwood received a related disciplinary outcome: a €30,000 fine and one-match suspension for breaching the fundamental rules of good conduct, again with a one-year probationary period from the decision.

Finally, Lyon’s staff were also involved in the ruling. Antonio Ferreira, the goalkeeping coach who attempted to strike the former Marseille player, was suspended for a total of five UEFA club competition matches for «serious blows and injuries». According to L'Équipe, two of those games come with a one-year probationary period.
