Hugo Álvarez makes captaincy debut for Celta vs Racing

Hugo Álvarez, a Celta academy product, made his debut as captain at 23 years old in this Saturday’s match against Racing de Santander. In comments reported by MARCA, Álvarez sounded genuinely moved about the moment: “For me, as a club academy player who has spent so many years here, it’s an enormous pride to be captain of the first team. Very proud and I hope it’s the first of many more.” He celebrated the captaincy with a victory that helped settle nerves around the club.

As MARCA reports, Álvarez said the team had been working well but results hadn’t reflected it. “We needed a win like this. The team had been working very well, but it wasn’t showing in the results,” he said. He also pointed to the upcoming break as a chance to return stronger and change the trend, especially at home.

Assist-maker for Durán

His impact went beyond the armband: he was heavily involved in the win by setting up Pablo Durán for both of his goals. MARCA also adds that Álvarez has played 297 minutes across six matches so far this season, and that the next step is to build on this result and push the side up.
