Irarragorri brings Daniel into Sporting: the letter challenge

Sporting’s Mareo campus turned into a feel-good story involving Daniel Ariza, a Llanes youth who ends up linked with the club after reaching out to Alejandro Irarragorri through a handwritten letter and a playful challenge. As reported by Sport, the Sporting owner was at Mareo the day before, accompanied by Joaquín Alonso, when the surprise connection became real.

The letter that opened the door

According to Sport, it all began last weekend at El Molinón after Irarragorri made contact with Ariza in the context of the club’s close follow-up on “agreement” teams like Llanes. Ariza had the chance to greet the first-team players while they warmed up and asked the president about a possible signing.

After the match, Sport quotes Ariza explaining how he messaged Irarragorri expecting no reply, but “he did respond”. The request was simple: send a letter detailing the standout qualities of each squad player and why Ariza believed Sporting could reach the top division. In his letter, Ariza singled out players one by one, including Yáñez (“reflections like a cat”), Guille Rosas (“like a cheesecake, always a good call”), Corredera (“a gladiator on the pitch”) and Otero (“raw gold”).

From Mareo to training day

Sport adds that the president followed through this week, after attending the match versus Burgos, inviting Ariza—this time with family—to experience a full day with the squad. Irarragorri had him arrive early dressed in Sporting’s green second kit with Guille Rosas’ name and number, and Sport notes a comment from Juan Otero in the dressing room: “With the star’s kit, huh”.

During the session, the staff integrated him, and Sport describes a moment when the physical coach Juan Cruz Mónaco asked who he’d pick if there were a school match against another class. Ariza’s answer was “Guille”, to applause. After training, Guille Rosas handed him his game shirt with a dedication to mark the day, and the pair now expect to keep in touch on social media.
