Johan Manzambi, Aston Villa’s record buy chasing Balón d’Or young player

Aston Villa’s forward Johan Manzambi has been nominated for the Balón d’Or’s best young player after a rapid rise: despite having just 47 club starts, Villa paid over £50m and he scored on his Premier League debut against Tottenham. At 20, his senior breakthrough came with Freiburg in 2024.

From Freiburg to Europe’s spotlight

BBC Sport links the leap to his breakthrough season in Germany. He was named the Europa League Young Player of the Season, with Freiburg losing the final to Villa in May. In total last season, Manzambi scored 12 goals in 61 appearances, and among Bundesliga players in his role he ranked first for 116 progressive carries of more than 10 metres, 13 carries ending in shots and 78 fouls won.

World Cup boost, knee setback

For Switzerland, Manzambi scored three goals in four World Cup games, before a knee injury ended his tournament, a year after his senior international debut. He now has another chance to keep climbing when Switzerland face Scotland in the Nations League this Tuesday.

Former Freiburg staffer Bernhard Weis told BBC Sport that as a teen Manzambi would still be involved with the academy and even helped arrange things for younger players. Weis also said the first half-year at Freiburg was difficult, until the forward added five kilos and became faster and stronger—prompting Villa’s record move this summer, with a five-year deal.
