Lucas Digne left out vs Monaco by PSG despite Nuno Mendes’ ban

Lucas Digne is left out of PSG’s squad for the Ligue 1 third-round match against Monaco. The French full-back, who looked set to start as an option after Nuno Mendes was ruled out through suspension, does not make the list announced by the club this Friday. According to RMC Sport, the latest information was that Digne was not injured, so the decision remains unclear—whether it’s a late physical concern or a purely sporting call.

Last-minute questions

RMC Sport points to the key tension in the build-up: with Mendes suspended, Digne was the most straightforward candidate to cover the left side, yet he’s absent from the matchday group for PSG vs Monaco. For now, no injury update has been reported to explain his omission.

The broader backdrop also matters. Last weekend, Luis Enrique took an unexpected route by deploying Warren Zaïre-Emery at left-back against Lille (2-2). After coming on in the second half, Zaïre-Emery was involved in the second goal conceded, scored by Dilane Bakwa, before PSG salvaged the draw via late strikes from Vitinha and Marquinhos.

Return, but limited starts

Since returning to PSG this summer—after two seasons there from 2013 to 2015, a loan to AS Roma, and then a move onward to Barça—Digne has only started once. That came on 16 August in the Trophée des Champions, which PSG lost to Lens (1-0). He was an unused substitute on 12 August against Aston Villa in the UEFA Super Cup (2-1), and also remained on the bench on 23 August at Rennes in Ligue 1 (2-2).

RMC Sport also recalls Digne’s comments at the time of his summer signing: “Je reviens en tant qu'homme. Je suis également différent en tant que joueur. J'ai plus de maturité et d'expérience, et j'ai envie d'apporter cette expérience au groupe et de gagner énormément de trophées.”
