Malen sparks in Roma: Europe’s most prolific scorer

Donyell Malen has gone from struggling to make an impact for Aston Villa to becoming, as BBC Sport reports, the most prolific scorer across Europe’s top five leagues since his Roma debut on 18 January.

The surge in front of goal

The numbers are eye-catching. Since that first match, Malen has scored 20 goals—more than Harry Kane (16) and Lamine Yamal (15), among others, over the same span in the Premier League, La Liga, Serie A, Bundesliga and Ligue 1. He also leads the combined tally for goals plus assists with 22, ahead of Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes (20), Yamal (19) and Kane (18).

BBC Sport also pinpoints the rate of scoring: at Villa he found the net once every 149.8 minutes, but in Rome that figure is down to 96.7 minutes. Overall, in 46 Premier League appearances for Aston Villa, the 27-year-old scored 10 times and made two assists; since joining Roma he has 21 goals and three assists in 25 matches.

Role change more than ‘luck’

The report argues the turnaround is not just confidence or form. It suggests Roma’s success with Malen may come from how he’s being used. At Villa, he was often deployed across the front line and spent only 52% of his league minutes as a central striker. At Roma, by contrast, 99% of his Serie A minutes have come through the middle under Gian Piero Gasperini, making him the focal point where he can hurt defenses.

BBC Sport says the same conclusion matches the eye test. After Roma’s 1-1 Champions League draw with Fenerbahce last Thursday—when Malen assisted their goal—French football journalist Julien Laurens told Match of the Day that Malen had become central to Gasperini’s plans: “He has been really efficient, super clinical… Malen is at the heart of everything they do with the ball” (as quoted by BBC Sport).
