Natalia Arroyo sacked by Aston Villa after WSL start without a win

Aston Villa have sacked Natalia Arroyo after a winless Women’s Super League start: two defeats and two draws from their first four matches. The move follows Sunday’s 4-0 loss to Tottenham.

BBC Sport reports that Arroyo was told on Monday evening, with the squad informed on Tuesday morning. The Spaniard joined the club in January 2025 and still had two years left on her contract.

Change in the dugout

Next up for Aston Villa is the Women’s League Cup on Wednesday against Newcastle (19:30 BST). Brian Sorensen, the club’s women’s technical advisor, has been placed in interim charge.

Flashes but not consistency

Since taking over, Villa showed moments of promise, with Arroyo initially helping steady the ship when they were flirting with relegation in her first six months. Despite spending in the transfer window, the team were underwhelming last season, and the defence looked especially exposed from the start of 2026-27—culminating in the Spurs defeat.
