OM-PSG: disciplinary file opened for homophobic chants at the Vélodrome

At the Stade Vélodrome, during OM-PSG (1-2) on the 5th matchday of Ligue 1, homophobic chants were heard from the stands. According to RMC Sport, a disciplinary dossier has been opened, meaning OM now faces the risk of sanctions.

Possible punishments ahead

The context makes the situation heavier: as RMC Sport recalls, last season the Ligue discipline body handed down €212,500 in fines, along with six matches involving a stadium ban/partial closure and four matches with suspension, again with partial stadium closure related to this type of incident.

Protocol and match decisions

A few days before the derby, Sports minister Marina Ferrari sent a letter to LFP president Vincent Labrune asking for the full application of the FIFA protocol in cases of discrimination in stadiums.

That protocol matters because, as the article notes, a match should be stopped when homophobic chants are heard. Yet RMC Sport states that at the Vélodrome on Sunday the chants were repeated at least twice by Marseille ultras and the referee did not interrupt the game, unlike the previous day in Lyon-Rennes.

In the match details, play was stopped at the 36th minute because of a banner displayed in the North stand (Bad Gones). Afterwards, even with warnings from the stadium announcer, the jeers aimed at the Saint-Étienne rival continued, forcing the referee to send everyone to the dressing rooms. The game then restarted after a 15-minute break.

Tolisso asks for consistency

After the match, Corentin Tolisso called for the same decisions to be taken across all stadiums. As RMC Sport reports, he stressed that chants and banners appear “every week” and that stopping a match should be done consistently, not depending on whether the result goes one way or another.
