Pol Lorente leaves Mexico and sets sights on Valencia, Mundo Deportivo says

Pol Lorente will not continue as a fitness coach for Mexico’s national team. The Mexican Football Federation announced on Saturday the end of his spell in the role after a two-year stint, starting in August 2024, according to the statement published by the FMF and reported by Mundo Deportivo.

Lorente was expected to be part of the technical team of new head coach Rafael Márquez, who was unveiled this week. However, Mundo Deportivo suggests his next step could be joining Javier Aguirre at Valencia, after they previously worked together at Mallorca.

Shake-up in the staff

For the September and October FIFA window, when Mexico will face Colombia, Peru, the United States and Chile, the team’s physical preparation will not be handled by Lorente. As the federation announced, it will be managed by specialists already included in the institutional structure for national teams.

Mexico still hiring

The search for a new fitness coach is ongoing. The federation said the sporting direction, together with the coach, will lead the process to bring in what they call the “best profile,” and the appointment will be made official once the procedure is completed.

Experience in Spain

Mundo Deportivo highlights that Lorente has broad experience across teams in Spain and worked with the Mexico set-up since 2024 alongside Aguirre, who led the side at the last World Cup. The immediate questions now are who takes over in Mexico for the next international window and whether Valencia becomes the destination being floated.
