Porto-Benfica 3-1: Veiga scores as Samu returns after seven months

Porto beat Benfica at Do Dragão (3-1) in the seventh round of the Primeira Liga, in a match where Gabri Veiga was decisive and the spotlight also fell on the comeback of Samu Aghehowa after seven months out with an injury, according to Mundo Deportivo.

Veiga puts Porto ahead

The game started intense and fairly even. Benfica threatened first through a header by Gianluca Prestianni, which went over the bar. After that early spell, Porto took over and struck in the 31st minute: Veiga received a long pass from Pepê, controlled with one touch and finished into the net past Samuel Soares.

Benfica collapse, Porto finishes strongly

Everything got harder for Benfica shortly after as Clément Lenglet was sent off after collecting his second booking for an incident involving ex-Sevilla player André Silva. Even down to ten men, the visitors stayed alive: Alexander Bah levelled in the 51st minute with a header from a cross by Prestianni.

Three minutes later, Porto restored their lead. Pablo Rosario played a through ball that found André Silva in the box; he squared it immediately to Victor Froholdt, who scored to make it 2-1. The third came from In-beom Hwang, who scored with a first-time finish on his 30th birthday, again assisted by Silva.

In the 85th minute, the crowd rose to welcome Samu Aghehowa back onto the pitch. The 22-year-old returned after a right knee sprain that turned into an anterior cruciate ligament injury, keeping him out since February 9 and ruling him out for the rest of the season and the 2026 World Cup, as Mundo Deportivo reports.
