Quagliata, the left-back the Dépor bet on for Primera

When Deportivo first unveiled Giacomo Quagliata, very few fans had even seen footage and many struggled to say his surname. But, as Sport reports, the left-back has since become one of the squad’s main players in LaLiga Primera División, with a clear connection to the Riazor stands.

From Serie B to Riazor

Sport explains that the club’s route to Quagliata began with an attempt to solve the left-back role through the domestic market. Deportivo wanted to wait for Rafa Obrador and also made an offer to Eibar for Cristian Gutiérrez. However, with no suitable option emerging as a competitor or partner for Sergio Escudero, they moved their search to Europe. This time, Quagliata came from the Cremonese, after a loan spell at Catanzaro, bringing the player into Coruña at a higher level.

Salgado: “undisputed starter”

José Ángel Salgado, according to Sport, is blunt about the significance of the deal: “It’s one of Deportivo’s great signings in the last few years.” He adds that Quagliata was initially expected to complement Escudero, but “ended up becoming an undisputed starter”, delivering “more than a worthy performance in Primera División.” Sport also notes Salgado’s view that Quagliata “was missed against Sevilla”, since Angeliño still needed more time to be ready.

The coach attributes the quick adaptation to the player’s Italian training. Sport quotes Salgado talking about Serie B’s competitiveness, the emphasis on defensive work, and Quagliata’s ability in one-on-one defending, pressing, positioning and repeating high-effort actions. Salgado believes there is room to improve his crossing, but says Quagliata “has the entire left flank to himself” and, for now, “is essential” for Deportivo.
