Serie A fines Juventus €10,000

Serie A has fined Juventus 10,000 euros this Tuesday after a small group of supporters—located in the South Stand, first tier—turned their backs and failed to respect the minute of silence held in honor of Sandro Mazzola.

The tribute was scheduled following the death of the Inter legend, who passed away last Saturday at the age of 83. As Mundo Deportivo reports, the league spelled out the basis for the penalty: “€10,000 fine for Juventus, for not having demonstrably respected (…) the minute of silence ordered by the FIGC.”

Tribute disrupted

The sanction was reduced, according to the competition, because of two factors: Juventus’ “immediate formal position” condemning the behavior and the “disassociation of the rest of the crowd present” at the stadium. During the minute of silence, ultras from the Curva Sud disrupted the moment by turning away from the pitch and starting chants intended to drown out the tribute.

Mundo Deportivo also notes that the majority of attendees reacted quickly, launching a massive round of applause to overpower the chants from the ultras group.

Juventus, meanwhile, released a firm statement condemning the conduct of its own fans and stressed that “no rivalry can justify the lack of respect during a minute of silence.”
