Simeone bets on recovering Julián Álvarez after derby scare

Atlético boss Diego Pablo Simeone was blunt about Julián Álvarez after the derby against Real Madrid, saying they will “get him back”. The match ended 2-1 for Atlético, with the Argentine striker on for 28 minutes and close to making it 3-0, before Konaté’s save.

Simeone also praised the reception at the Metropolitano: “When you give what you have, they back you. Julián tried, and we’re going to recover him. We’ll work accordingly with him,” he said. This season, Julián’s output has been limited so far, with one assist in 173 minutes, though he has improved in his most recent showings, including against Real Madrid and Liverpool.

Inside the squad, Grimaldo noted Julián is “very focused” on helping the team and that everyone trusts him. From Argentina, Giuliano added: “I see Julián very well, he’s getting better every day.” The Barcelona side, meanwhile, were reported to have moved on: Deco said the Julián story is “past”. Julián will return to Atlético after his match with Benín to keep progressing in his recovery.
