Stephan El Shaarawy returns to Genoa after Roma spell

Stephan El Shaarawy has returned to Genoa, the club where he was formed and made his first professional steps. As L’Équipe reports, the forward, a free agent after five seasons with AS Roma, has signed this Wednesday with the side he started out with in 2008-2009.

Back 18 years later

At 33 years old, the Italy international’s move lands with plenty of symbolism: eighteen years after featuring for the Genoa first time in the pro ranks, he comes back to close the loop. Born in Savona, El Shaarawy has previously played for Padova, AC Milan, Monaco, Shanghai Shenhua and then Roma.

The Roma chapter

His second stint at AS Roma brought 210 matches, including a Conference League title in 2022. He also adds international experience with 32 caps for Italy and over 500 career appearances.

After putting pen to paper, El Shaarawy said: «It’s like a circle closing», adding that «being at home again and wearing these colours once more» is part of Genoa’s identity. He’ll also reunite at the club with Daniele De Rossi, his former Roma teammate, now in charge on the Genoa bench.

With the deal done, Genoa bring back a proven attacker with instant familiarity and leadership for the coming campaign.
