Tottenham bottom after £300m+ spend: where do they go from here?

Tottenham Hotspur head into the international break anchored at the bottom of the Premier League after picking up just two points from five games. Their start has been harsh: they’ve scored only two goals so far, and at the weekend they suffered another setback, losing 3-2 to Aston Villa.

As Sky Sports notes, the feeling around the club was that “this time would be different”. The rationale was twofold: Tottenham had moved for a manager with proven Premier League experience, and they backed the plan with a £300m+ transfer war chest—the biggest in the club’s history. Instead, the performances haven’t matched the spending.

Five games, no traction

Sky Sports argues that it isn’t quite as bleak as the table suggests. Against Aston Villa, Tottenham created several “presentable” chances in the first half and, if they had taken any of them, they would have gone into the three-week break with less pressure and more breathing room. But they didn’t, and the lack of finishing has kept the spotlight firmly on them.

Even though it’s early—only five matches—the inconsistency is spreading into a third consecutive season. The outlet adds that Tottenham have collected just 18 points in 2026, and since the start of 2024/25 they’re still one point fewer than West Ham, who were relegated at the end of last season.

With Roberto De Zerbi unable to avoid the growing scrutiny, the key question now is how quickly Tottenham can turn things around once league action resumes. For the moment, the investment hasn’t delivered the results fans and the club expected.
