Tuchel brings back Alexander-Arnold and Palmer, with warning

England head coach Thomas Tuchel has recalled Trent Alexander-Arnold and Cole Palmer to his squad for the Nations League, stressing that selection alone isn’t enough. According to BBC Sport, Tuchel said “the door is always open”, but warned players they have to “perform”.

Tuchel had left both out of his summer tournament squad in North America, and now they return for four Nations League matches during an extended international break after this weekend’s club fixtures. The message is clear: it’s a fresh competition, and the players’ roles are open to whoever delivers.

Back in the mix

Alexander-Arnold, 27, last featured in England when he came on as a substitute in a 1-0 win over Andorra in June 2025. BBC Sport reports he has made five appearances for Real Madrid this season (including three starts) and recorded one assist. Tuchel also clarified that, while Alexander-Arnold played in midfield in Real’s Champions League win over Inter earlier this month, for England he’s picked as a right-back.

Palmer, 24, hasn’t played for England since the 1-0 friendly defeat to Japan in March. This season for Chelsea, Tuchel highlighted, Palmer has four goals and two assists in six games.

“Perform” is the requirement

Tuchel framed their returns as a chance to prove themselves. He said the onus is now on the players to impress, adding that it’s one thing to be called up but another to perform for England. In comments to BBC Radio 5 Live, he broadened it into a squad-wide message about mentality and making the most of each international window.

England start at Wembley against World Cup winners Spain on Saturday 26 September, then travel to the Czech Republic (Tuesday 29) and Croatia (Saturday 3 October) before hosting the Czech Republic again on Tuesday 6 October. Per BBC Sport, several players miss out due to injuries, while Phil Foden is also not included.
