Valverde injured in left ankle during derby

Real Madrid has issued an official statement saying Fede Valverde finished the game with an injury to his left ankle, following an incident during the derby against Atlético.

In its report, the club explains that, after tests carried out by its medical services, Valverde has been diagnosed with a severe left-ankle trauma. Real Madrid added that the player will undergo new tests in the coming hours to determine the full extent of the problem.

Pending those results, there is speculation that the Uruguayan could be out for around three weeks, which would mean he misses Uruguay matches during this international break.

The club also criticised the referee decisions from the derby. It claims Valverde was injured in the first half when Kang-in Lee went in on the left ankle. Real Madrid asked for a sending-off, but neither the on-field referee nor VAR judged it sufficient for a red card, a decision that intensified the controversy.

Mundo Deportivo notes that the incident was among the images Mourinho showed in his post-match media briefing, as debate over the referee decisions continued.

For now, the decisive step is the additional testing Real Madrid says will be carried out within hours.
