Wayne Rooney: Man United don’t deserve Premier League titles

Wayne Rooney, former Manchester United striker, said his old club does not deserve to be awarded Premier League titles if Manchester City are stripped of them over financial rule breaches.

City have been found guilty on most of the 115 charges, covering the 2009-10 to 2017-18 period, plus a failure to cooperate with Premier League investigations between December 2018 and February 2023, according to BBC Sport. Sanctions are still to be confirmed and City plan to appeal.

Speaking on the Stick to United podcast, Rooney—who was with United when they finished runners-up to City in 2011-2012—argued he “wouldn’t feel comfortable” accepting another Premier League medal because, in his view, United “didn’t do enough” to win that season. He added that some players might accept it, but he wouldn’t. Still, Rooney expects stronger consequences: he believes City “are going to be relegated” and suggested the harshest options, including restrictions on spending for the next three or four seasons.
