Athletic's goalkeeper makes his competitive comeback with Racing Santander in their Primera División return against Villarreal following a muscle injury and knee surgery.
Julen Agirrezabala stepped onto the pitch for official competition for the first time in nearly eight months. The Basque goalkeeper, on loan at Racing Santander, made his debut in goal for the northern club against Villarreal in their historic return to La Liga after 14 years away.
According to Mundo Deportivo, the match ended in a 2-2 draw despite the hosts leading 2-0 at one point. Agirrezabala was tested from the start against a Villarreal side that finished third in the league last season, making saves from Mikautadze's early attempts, though he could not prevent goals from Gueye and Pépé near half-time.
A tough call
The goalkeeper's return to action represented a difficult decision for coach José Alberto López, who acknowledged the solid performance of his rival Simón Eriksson during pre-season. "I saw him calm, providing plenty of security and very brave in aerial situations," the manager stated.
This second chance comes after Agirrezabala suffered a muscle injury during his loan spell at Valencia in January, which later led to a meniscus issue requiring surgery. His return to competitive football marks a turning point in a campaign defined by absence from the pitch.
