Asoro leaves Metz to join Apollon Limassol

Swedish forward Joel Asoro, a disappointment since 2023, exits France to sign with Apollon Limassol after cutting short his Djurgården loan.

FC Metz is parting ways with Joel Asoro this week, a signing that never clicked since his 2023 arrival. The 27-year-old Swedish striker, who arrived for €1.5 million on a four-year deal, has cut short his loan at Swedish Djurgården and is heading to Cyprus, according to L'Équipe.

Asoro is set to join Apollon Limassol permanently, barring last-minute complications. The Swedish international (2 caps, 1 goal) has approved the switch and already has Djurgården's clearance to leave. In just over two years in Moselle, he made 53 appearances with 5 goals—a modest tally that sums up his underwhelming spell.

The winger never found his footing under the four managers in charge since 2023. While he started brightly during his first two months, his form dwindled over time. According to the French outlet, Asoro caused internal friction by oddly distancing himself during training sessions and club activities, and also rejected several potential destinations in previous transfer windows.
