Atletico Madrid reach agreement in principle with Tottenham to sign Argentina defender Cristian Romero for €40m plus add-ons.
Atletico Madrid have agreed a deal in principle with Tottenham to sign captain Cristian Romero, according to Sky Sports. The package is worth around €40 million (£34.2m) plus add-ons and includes a 15% sell-on clause for the Premier League side.
The 28-year-old Argentina international was long a target for Atletico, and Spurs were expected to allow the defender to leave this summer should a suitable offer arrive. Romero had consistently shown his preference for a move to Madrid, despite also attracting interest from Inter Milan and Arsenal.
Romero's final season at Tottenham was eventful: he was sent off twice in the Premier League during Spurs' battle against relegation and suffered a knee injury that ruled him out near the end of the campaign. However, he did feature in the final match that secured the club's survival. He made 124 appearances for Tottenham over five seasons, scoring 12 goals in the Premier League.
