Aubameyang: «I remember Super Depor, everyone loves the club»
The Gabonese striker explains his move to Deportivo and reveals that Marseille was «not a healthy environment»; signed for two seasons.
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has become one of Spanish football's biggest signings after joining Deportivo from Olympique de Marseille. Speaking to L'Equipe, the Gabonese forward explained his reasons for leaving the French club: «It was not a healthy environment. They decided I had to leave and I was not going to go against their wishes». Aubameyang received several offers but chose the sporting challenge that the Galician club represents.
«Deportivo is a historic club. I remember Super Depor when they won the league and played in the Champions League. Everyone loves the club for that glorious era», said the 37-year-old striker, who signed a two-year contract. Despite his ambition to «bring Deportivo back to the top», Aubameyang is aware of reality: «Our main objective this season is to avoid relegation».
The former Barcelona, Arsenal and Dortmund forward scored in pre-season and is set to start against Elche in LaLiga's opening weekend. He chose the number 7 shirt and hopes to bring his experience to a very young squad. At Marseille he ended last season with 14 goals and 10 assists, but admitted that constant changes at the club created a chaotic atmosphere that led him to seek a new project.
