Coventry seals Awoniyi deal from Forest for £17m

Coventry City have completed the signing of striker Taiwo Awoniyi from Nottingham Forest for approximately £17m, according to BBC Sport. The deal is expected to be finalised before the Sky Blues' Premier League return against Arsenal on Friday.

Awoniyi becomes the latest addition to Frank Lampard's summer recruitment drive as Coventry prepare for their first top-flight campaign in 25 years. The club have already secured midfielder Gus Hamer from Sheffield United, goalkeeper Carl Rushworth on loan from Brighton, winger Loum Tchaouna from Burnley, defender Aurele Amenda from Eintracht Frankfurt, and Ghana international Caleb Yirenkyi from Nordsjaelland.

Finding his feet again

The 29-year-old joined Forest as their record signing in 2022 for £17.2m but has fallen down the pecking order under the club's current setup. Last season he made just 17 appearances across all competitions, with his campaign disrupted by a serious intestinal rupture suffered in May 2025 after colliding with a post during a clash against Leicester, an injury that required him to be placed in an induced coma.

At Forest, Awoniyi scored 23 goals in 103 games but found himself behind Chris Wood and Igor Jesus in the striking hierarchy. His move to Coventry offers a fresh start at an ambitious club, where he will compete for the number nine role alongside Brandon Thomas-Asante and Ellis Simms, with Haji Wright currently sidelined through injury.
