Diego Monzón shining as Real Zaragoza's rising star
The 18-year-old midfielder stands out in preseason and manager Ibai Gómez predicts his breakthrough into the first team.
Diego Monzón has become one of the big names of the summer at Real Zaragoza. The 18-year-old Spanish-Ecuadorian midfielder has captured the fans' attention with his preseason performances, particularly on Saturday against Real B, when in just half an hour he drew some of the biggest ovations of the afternoon.
Monzón joined the youth academy from the Alevín B level and has established himself as one of the club's most promising talents. The sporting director secured his future by renewing his contract until 2029 last season, confirming their commitment to the player. Versatile in midfield — capable of playing as a central midfielder, in a double pivot or as an attacking midfielder — he made 17 appearances for the B team last season, starting 16 of them.
First-team manager Ibai Gómez has no doubts about his potential. In an interview with *Sport* eleven days ago, he stated: "Monzón will be a Real Zaragoza first-team player for sure. He has all the capacity and conditions to play at different levels, always positions himself well, looks forward and presses hard." The coach acknowledges that competition in his position may slow his progress, but forecasts his arrival in the first team "sooner rather than later".
