Edson Álvarez in talks to join Real Sociedad

The Mexican pivot from West Ham is in advanced negotiations with the Basque club and willing to take a pay cut to move to San Sebastián.

Edson Álvarez could be Real Sociedad's next signing. According to Matteo Moretto reporting in MARCA, the Basque club is holding advanced talks with West Ham over the Mexican international's transfer. The 28-year-old defender-midfielder has reportedly requested help to leave London.

Salary reduction to make the move happen

Álvarez appears willing to reduce his wages to join the txuriurdin side, which is positive news for Real's finances. The main stumbling block, however, is the transfer fee: West Ham paid 35 million euros for Álvarez three years ago and will want to recover most of that investment—a figure well above what Real typically spends.

The club's interest in the Mexican is not new. Back in July there was talk of a move amid competition from Ajax, but negotiations had stalled until now. His arrival would help Real strengthen a position of great need, especially following the collapse of Nayef Aguerd's transfer just days ago.

One concern is Álvarez's injury history, with recurring muscle problems a particularly sensitive issue given the squad's recent fitness struggles.
