📷 Mundo DeportivoAtlético closes in on 'Cuti' Romero deal from Tottenham
The Madrid side steps up efforts to sign the Argentine defender as his situation at Spurs shifts dramatically.
Atlético Madrid is advancing negotiations for Cristian Romero, a 28-year-old centre-back at Tottenham, according to Mundo Deportivo. The 'Cuti' has been a recurring target for Diego Pablo Simeone, and the English club's changing circumstances now make a deal more feasible.
A year ago, Spurs flatly refused any approach and valued him at 70 million. But after two seasons flirting with Premier League relegation and with signings like Van Hecke and Senesi in defence, they are seeking an exit for the Argentine. Inter was far advanced—prepared to pay 35 million fixed plus five in variables—yet stalled pending Pavard sales and failed to convince the player.
Romero prefers the Atlético project. Per Nicolo Schira, an agreement is already in place: a contract until 2030 at 6 million per season. Tottenham is asking 40 to 50 million; Atlético opened at 30, as Marca revealed. The deal hinges on outgoings: Nahuel Molina to Roma (18 million) and moves by Ruggeri and Thiago Almada that would raise around 53 million fixed.
