Atlético beats Marseille in friendly as Balerdi jeered by home fans

Marseille lost 1-2 to Atlético Madrid in their final warm-up at the Stade Vélodrome, with defender Leonardo Balerdi booed by supporters.

Marseille ended their preseason with a defeat against Atlético Madrid (1-2) at the Vélodrome, according to L'Équipe. The home side took the lead through Igor Paixao's goal in the 22nd minute, but couldn't hold on against an opponent who grew stronger as the match progressed.

The game was marred by an uncomfortable moment for Leonardo Balerdi, who was whistled by the Vélodrome crowd throughout the second half following defensive errors. The Argentine defender lost possession for Rodrigo Mendoza's equalizer (39th minute) and made another costly mistake for Carlos Martin's winning goal (78th minute). The booing intensified every time he touched the ball—an unusual scene in a friendly—and he was met with a chorus of jeers when substituted in the 82nd minute.

Paixao shines as Balerdi struggles

Brazilian winger Paixao was the bright spot for the hosts, scoring his fourth goal of the preseason with a clinical finish in the first half. Marseille showed good defensive work without the ball, but struggled to control defensive transitions, particularly in the Balerdi-Kondogbia pairing.

Looking ahead, the club will kick off their Ligue 1 campaign next Sunday against Strasbourg (20:45) at home, while Atlético begin their season on Wednesday against Málaga.
