City seal Rulli as Donnarumma's backup keeper

Gerónimo Rulli joins Manchester City from Marseille for €3.8m to serve as deputy to Gianluigi Donnarumma.

Manchester City have sealed the signing of Gerónimo Rulli as backup goalkeeper to Gianluigi Donnarumma. According to the English press, the club has reached an agreement with Olympique de Marseille for the 34-year-old Argentine keeper for around €3.8 million.

Rulli has been cleared to travel to Manchester in the coming hours, where he will undergo medical tests ahead of signing. The contract will be for two seasons plus an optional third, according to reports. The Argentine, a World Cup winner with Argentina in 2022 behind Dibu Martínez, accepts the role of second-choice keeper after James Trafford left City seeking first-team football at Leeds, a move that makes him British football's most expensive goalkeeper at €52.6 million.

Rulli returns to City, who signed him in 2016 but never gave him a debut, loaning him to Real Sociedad before selling him in 2017. He went on to play for the Spanish side (2016-2019), Villarreal (2020-2023), and Ajax before joining Marseille last summer.
