Bezos consortium could control Liverpool within a year

The 1892 Holdings group, which includes Amazon's owner, holds an option to become the English club's majority shareholder within the next twelve months.

The consortium led by Amit Bhatia and including billionaire Jeff Bezos has acquired 38 % of Liverpool's capital from Fenway Sports Group (FSG), according to The Athletic. This represents slightly more than initially estimated — the 33 % announced when the deal was officially confirmed — but what comes next is the real story.

A hidden control option

1892 Holdings is not just entering as a partner with nearly two-fifths of the club: according to The Athletic, the agreement includes an option allowing the consortium to exceed 50 % ownership within the next twelve months if it chooses to do so. Bhatia, a former co-owner of Queens Park Rangers, will take the position of vice-president at the Anfield club. The consortium also counts Eduardo Saverin, Facebook's co-founder, among its main investors.

The deal thus shows significantly greater involvement than initially anticipated, opening the door to a change of control at the red club much faster than might otherwise be expected.
