Espanyol falls to Coventry City in final preseason match

The pericos lose 3-1 in their last friendly before the season starts after a strong first half and poor finish.

Espanyol has closed its preseason with defeat. According to MARCA, the pericos fell 3-1 to Coventry City, the English side recently promoted to the Premier League, in what was their final friendly before domestic competition begins.

Manolo González's side dominated the first half and went ahead in the 37th minute thanks to a spectacular goal by Roberto Fernández. The striker acrobatically finished a cross to make it 0-1, a goal the entire team dedicated to Dani Jarque, remembering 17 years since his passing.

The second half was very different. Espanyol fell apart in the final 25 minutes: Sakamoto equalized in the 68th minute, Eccles made it 2-1 in the 75th, and Simms sealed the rout in the 84th following a Riedel error. Poor feelings just weeks before their league debut, though the team showed the debut of Unai Núñez. With two wins, three draws, and this loss, they close an uneven preseason.
