Lens stuns PSG to claim first French Super Cup

Thauvin scored in the first half and Lens held firm with ten men from the 39th minute to defeat PSG in the Trophée des Champions final.

PSG under Luis Enrique could not add another trophy just four days after winning the UEFA Super Cup. Lens blocked their path in the Trophée des Champions at the Stade Bollaert-Delelis with a stunning 1-0 victory, a battle where the northern side wrote history by claiming their first French Super Cup.

The early strike

The visiting side dominated the opening period, but it was Lens who struck first. Veteran winger Florian Thauvin scored just after the half-hour mark with a first-time finish following a cross from Udol. The blow could have been heavier without the red card shown to Antonio in the 39th minute for a brutal challenge on Akliouche. Down to ten men, Lens faced a monumental task. Doué had a chance to equalize before the break but his shot hit the crossbar.

Epic resistance in adversity

PSG emerged determined in the second half and Luis Enrique made changes, bringing on Nuno Mendes, Fabián Ruiz and Dembélé. The Portuguese fullback created immediate danger but Risser made a fine save. Lens, despite being down to ten, maintained a compact and tireless defense. Fabián Ruiz had a goal ruled out for offside in the closing stages and Dembélé missed in a good position. A elbow from Nuno Mendes on Skoras in the 87th minute sealed PSG's misery with another red. According to Mundo Deportivo, the historic Super Cup remained in the hands of France's northern club.
