Femenía becomes LaLiga's first red card of the season after referee overturns call

Getafe defender shown red in the 40th minute of Alavés-Getafe following a challenge on Rebbach after initial yellow was upgraded.

Kiko Femenía became the first player to be sent off this LaLiga season in a match. The incident occurred in the 40th minute of the clash between Alavés and Getafe, when the Getafe full-back's boot made contact with Rebbach's knee.

Referee Orellana Cid initially judged the challenge as a clear foul but without excessive force, reaching for the yellow card. Since it was Femenía's first infringement, the official felt a caution was sufficient punishment. However, Carlos Del Cerro Grande intervened from the VAR booth with the replays to suggest to the referee that the violence of the tackle warranted a harsher sanction.

After reviewing the incident on the pitchside monitor, Orellana Cid overturned his initial decision and showed the straight red to the Getafe defender, who was forced to leave the field. According to Mundo Deportivo, Femenía's sending-off marked the season's first official red card, in a match characterized by frequent stoppages and hard-fought play.
