Francho Serrano manages offer and edges closer to Zaragoza exit
The Zaragoza captain negotiates his departure after failing to agree on salary reduction; could join a Portuguese club.
Francho Serrano has one foot and a half out of Real Zaragoza. According to Sport, the Zaragoza academy product and captain is managing a solid offer that could come from Portugal, and his departure is very likely following a summer marked by failed salary negotiations.
The midfielder, who renewed through 2030 on a deal worth over half a million euros, recently turned down a lucrative Russian proposal. However, his situation at the Aragonese club has become untenable: the new ownership that arrived at Zaragoza prioritizes financial sustainability and views his high salary as a roadblock to the cost-cutting plan following the drop to Primera RFEF.
New ownership applies pressure
The new management has made clear they want the player out. His absence from the squad lists against Logroñés and Villarreal B in preseason friendlies was the most obvious sign of their intention. Sporting director Lalo Arantegui shifted his message over the summer: first insisting continuity was "on track," then admitting they hadn't reached any agreement. With the arrival of new leadership, the picture accelerated: offloading Francho's wages would provide considerable relief to the sustainable project the new board is pushing.
For now it remains unclear whether the move will materialize as a loan or permanent transfer, but all signs suggest the captain will depart in the coming days.
