Gakpo on Spurs' radar: the data behind a Liverpool puzzle

Tottenham have identified Cody Gakpo as a target, according to BBC Sport, as Roberto de Zerbi reshapes his attacking options. The Liverpool forward appeals because he offers considerable tactical flexibility: while he plays mainly from the left, he can operate as a central striker or false nine, dropping deep to link play before releasing runners—exactly what De Zerbi wants.

The deal faces obstacles. Liverpool are unwilling to weaken their attack, particularly after Mohamed Salah's departure and with Hugo Ekitike sidelined by an Achilles injury. The Reds are even chasing Bradley Barcola from PSG, underscoring they won't easily part with Gakpo.

Yet the numbers explain Spurs' interest. Although Gakpo scored just seven Premier League goals last season, he was among Europe's most dangerous wide forwards: only seven wingers averaged more touches in the opposition box than his 2.2 per 90. He finished with a higher expected goals total (8.59), more shots (87) and more big chances created (10) than any Tottenham attacker. At 6ft 4in, he also ranks in the 96th percentile for aerial volume among positional peers—a rare asset for a winger.
