Genesio faces a summer of overhaul at Marseille

Bruno Genesio will inherit a very different Marseille than the one De Zerbi left just months ago. According to L'Équipe, the new manager takes over a squad that has been largely overhauled, with undefined objectives and a sporting structure that needs rebuilding from scratch.

The transformation contrasts sharply with the optimism of the previous summer. In August 2025, when Adrien Rabiot and Jonathan Rowe were warming up at Roazhon Park in Rennes, sporting director Medhi Benatia promised to «have a great year» and «enjoy ourselves». He spoke of doubling positions, dreamed of a Ligue 1 podium finish, the French Cup, and a meaningful Champions League run. New signings paraded on a platform at Marignane airport.

Now Genesio and his staff will need quick results to manage Marseille's characteristic impatience. The city demands swift success, and the French coach will have to navigate expectations with a project that essentially starts from zero, both on the pitch and administratively.
