Girona opens disciplinary case against Tsygankov before Córdoba trip
Girona sanctions Viktor Tsygankov for refusing to play against Leganés and airing the conflict on social media.
Girona continues to face internal turmoil ahead of facing Córdoba CF this Friday at 21:00 at El Arcángel. The Catalan club has opened a disciplinary case against Viktor Tsygankov after the Ukrainian forward refused to participate in their league debut against Leganés (1-1), despite being in the squad, according to *Sport*.
The player's refusal was confirmed by Girona manager Quique Álvarez after the match: «He was called up and didn't want to get changed». But what began as a disagreement on the pitch escalated when Tsygankov used social media to share messages the club had sent him in recent days, some of which included the phrase «Someday I'll speak...».
The conflict goes beyond the match
The club issued an official statement: «Girona has opened a disciplinary case against Viktor Tsygankov following his recent conduct. The player's actions may constitute a breach of his contractual obligations and do not meet the conduct standards required by the club».
The disagreement extends beyond the league opener. The Ukrainian international has repeatedly stated his intention to leave Girona despite having a valid contract, and has rejected playing in LaLiga Hypermotion following the team's relegation. His absence against Córdoba is virtually certain.
More divisions in the squad
Tsygankov is not an isolated case in the Girona dressing room. Relegation has left several players wanting to leave: Donny van de Beek didn't even play in the debut, while Vanat and Azzedine Ounahi —who is headed to Ajax under Míchel— also appear to be out of the project. Arnau Martínez and Álex Moreno remain in more uncertain situations, though both continue to be potential candidates to depart before the transfer window closes.
