Greenwood shines in Istanbul against Lyon
The former Marseille player scores a stunning goal with Fenerbahçe in the 1-1 draw in Istanbul before the decisive second leg in Lyon.
Mason Greenwood made his mark when it mattered. In the Champions League playoff first leg between Fenerbahçe and Olympique Lyon, the English winger netted a spectacular goal that secured a 1-1 draw for the Turkish side in Istanbul. According to L'Équipe, Fenerbahçe head into next Wednesday's return fixture in the Rhône with their hopes very much alive (kick-off 21:00).
Greenwood, 24, continues to show his form following his summer switch to Turkey. Sold on 14 July for nearly €40 million after two stellar seasons at Marseille (48 goals in 81 appearances), the English forward has already proven his goal-scoring credentials. This is not his first encounter with the French side: back in February, he responded to Corentin Tolisso opening the scoring at the Vélodrome, though Marseille lost that one 3-2.
All to play for in Lyon
Greenwood's strike is crucial because it keeps Fenerbahçe very much in contention for progression. Everything will be settled next Wednesday in France, where the Turkish club will seek an upset or at least repeat a similar result to secure a spot in the next round.
