The Brazilian midfielder finalises his £75m transfer to Arsenal after emotionally telling Newcastle he wanted to leave, says the club's sporting director.
Bruno Guimaraes becomes the fourth major Newcastle departure in less than a year, completing his £75m move to Arsenal following a breakthrough in negotiations this week, according to BBC Sport.
Newcastle's hierarchy acknowledge the sale was not part of their summer plan, but the 28-year-old Brazilian captain communicated his desire to leave in an "very emotional" manner. Sporting director Ross Wilson explained: "What we had to weigh up was that Bruno, very respectfully in his behaviour towards us but also very emotionally, effectively told us he wanted to leave and move on." Guimaraes said an emotional farewell to teammates and staff at the club's pre-season training camp in Spain.
This departure follows the exits of Sandro Tonali to Tottenham and Anthony Gordon to Barcelona, plus Alexander Isak's move to Liverpool last summer. Newcastle are actively searching for an experienced midfielder to replace him ahead of the September 1st deadline.
